Letter to the Editor
ByDear Editor
I am writing this letter in order to bring your attention towards the downsides of coal mining in South Africa. Coal processing creates large amounts of dust in the air surrounding the plants. The dust from these plants severely harm the lungs of the people living nearby. Burning coal for energy production also creates environmentally harmful greenhouse gases.
According to SAWEA (south African Wind Energy Association) “The wind IPPs that have successfully reached commercial operations to date have reported 2723 job years for South African citizens. Over a twelve month period which ended in March 2020 the operational wind projects have reduced CO2 emissions by 6.4M tons”
Wind energy is much better for the environment and the health of the people living in South Africa. Wind production will create many safe and clean jobs. It also produces no greenhouse gas emissions. If wind energy and solar energy are combined enough electricity would be available for everyone in South Africa without any harmful effects towards the people or environment.
Please consider the people of South Africa when planning their energy supply and stop mining and burning coal.
Sincerely,
Aspen G
