Elements of Concern
ByCoral bleaching is a big issue for coral reef ecosystems, coral bleaching happens when coral loses its vibrant colours and turn white. When the ocean environment changes. For example, if it gets too hot, the coral stresses out and expels the algae. As the algae leaves, the coral fades until it has been bleached.
There are lots of factors that can cause coral bleaching, some of which are chemicals on the periodic table, including, Cyanide, Carbon Dioxide, (not enough Calcium Carbonate), oxybenzone and octinoxate (sunscreen chemicals that bleach coral)
Cyanide- Cyanide bleaching of coral happens when people use Cyanide to fish
Carbon dioxide- Carbon dioxide poisoning happens when people pollute the oceans and Carbon dioxide gets into the coral reefs
Oxybenzone and Octinoxate- These chemicals are chemicals commonly found in sunscreens, when people put sunscreen on and then go swimming or reef diving, the chemicals come off in the water and then poison the coral in the coral reefs
