People Spreading Awareness about Soil Erosion in Haiti!
By
Someone I found who is trying to fix the eroded soil in Haiti is Aiden McIntyre and Dr. Foran. Aiden McIntyre and Dr. Foran wrote a 25-page PDF in 2016 about soil erosion and deforestation in Haiti. The PDF explains what is happening to the soil and trees in Haiti, it explains why this is happening and how this is happening along with when it started. It started in 1994 when the French influenced the western half of the island of Saint Domingue to clear forests and plant cash crops there instead. The French wanted to mass produce sugar and coffee, which leaded to removing many forests and plants and make an environment where very little plants and animals could survive. Because there wasn’t plants to give the soil nutrients, the soil started eroding and soon a little eroded soil turned into about 15,000 acres of soil being washed away each year. Aiden McIntyre is minor league baseball player; he plays for Oakland Athletics in California. Dr. Foran is an orthopedic surgeon in Golden, Colorado, he has been an orthopedic surgeon for over 16 years. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and school of Medicine medical school in 2005. An organization I found that is trying to stop the soil erosion in Haiti is the Jack Brewer Foundation. The Jack Brewer Foundation’s goal is to bring better lives for people who live in Haiti and who are affected by the eroded soil. They have been planting trees in the places that need it most and have been trying to spread awareness so that other organizations can find out about it hopefully want to help out and stop deforestation and soil erosion.
